Braces/Orthoses

Pediatric Orthoses

Cascade Dafo Inc introduces its newly named JumpStart family, which features off-the-shelf, low-cost, no-casting-required orthoses for early-intervention patients who can be difficult to cast and fit properly. Products are available in five models with new names and logos. The orthoses offer varying levels of support for children who are either low or high tone with mild to moderate pronation, supination, inconsistent ankle modulation, or excess plantarflexion. The offerings, which are part of the Fast Fit™ line, consist of two nesting plastic shells. The flexible inner shell provides wraparound control of the foot position, while the outer shell provides additional support and stabilization to the heel. The nested shells are slim enough to fit into a patient's normal shoe. They are available in .25-inch increments from 4 inches to 7.50 inches, and in two widths.

Elbow Brace

When forearm muscles become strained, they pull at the attachment point, resulting in elbow pain. The Gel Arc from Serola Biomechanics Inc helps provide relief by placing a gel barrier between the muscles and the epicondyle, which establishes a secondary attachment point and shifts the pull to the gel barrier. The product is placed in an arc around the epicondyle, so it does not interfere with the action of the muscle. A foam pad under the buckle helps prevent pinching. The brace absorbs shock and vibration, and a shortening system makes it one-size-fits-all.

Heel Lift

The new Clearly Adjustable™ heel lift from G&W Heel Lift Inc is made of a high-tech, transparent, layered material that conforms and does not compress or cause heel rubbing. The products address therapeutic needs such as leg-length differences or short-leg syndrome, Achilles tendon pain, assistive gait training during post-stroke rehab, prosthetic adjustment and alignment, stabilizing corrections of lumbar subluxations, and low-back pain or pelvic instability. Patients can peel and replace 1-mm layers to provide degrees of elevation from 2 to 12 mm. The variable height allows staged introduction for a gradual shift in balance. Lifts can be trimmed to fit and customized with a pair of scissors, creating spot-pressure relief for heel spurs or plantar warts. The stair-stepped design of the bottom stays in its place without adhesives or tape. The product is available in three sizes and with adjustable heights to 12 mm. It can be modified to provide variable Varus/valgus correction from 1° to 5°.

AFO Gauntlet

Acor Orthopaedic Inc has introduced a line of custom AFO gauntlets, which includes a denim gauntlet, a coronet gauntlet with a synthetic suede finish, and a camouflage gauntlet with a new ratchet buckle. All AFOs in the line are reinforced with Quikform®, a lightweight thermoplastic material that provides functionality and support. The AFOs are lined with X-Static and 1/16-inch NeoSponge, a form-fitting, flexible, synthetic-rubber material that provides cushioning. X-Static is an environmentally safe, pure-silver fiber woven into the material that has been clinically proven to eliminate 99.9% of bacteria and fungi, and it helps destroy odor.

Spinal Orthosis

Medi USA LP has received L-Code Medicare billing approval for the Spinomed® III spinal orthosis for osteoporosis treatment. The device consists of rigid moldable supports contained in a garment worn like a backpack. The lightweight, low-profile orthosis aids in freedom of shoulder and arm movements, and does not obstruct thoracic or abdominal breathing. A padded abdominal panel provides additional comfort. The antimigration straps and silicone beads help keep the brace in position. A padded, moisture-wicking material is used at the contact points. The adjustability and four sizes fit most body types. As a patient's condition improves, the posterior and anterior panels are removable to provide flexibility and longevity. The patented design is indicated for hyperkyphosis with chronic back pain and osteoporotic bone collapse in the thoracic and lumbar spine.

New Generation in Gel Technology

GelSmart™ M2Gel™, from PediFix®, features a new formulation and new designs to work with difficult-to-handle toe and finger problems. The line of M2Gel products is dermatologist tested, hypoallergenic, and odorless. The formulation allows for greater stretch without reinforcement, thinner designs that fit in tight footwear, and increased comfort. The products are thin, absorb shock and shear forces, and soften and moisturize skin through the slow release of medical-grade mineral oils. Components are used on fingers with or without splints. M2Gels are available in new products such as fifth-digit corn sleeves, trimmable tubes, thin Hallux and Taylor bunion pads, regular- and unilateral-toe crests, metatarsal pads with toe loops, and new thong-sandal spreaders. Toe and finger caps are engineered with thin walls, thicker ends, and a heat and moisture vent for comfort and protection.
