Elbow Brace

Serola Biomechanics Inc has developed an improved band for its Gel Arc Elbow Brace. Unlike other epicondylitis braces that compress the forearm muscles, the Serola Gel Arc Elbow Brace fits close to the epicondyle and creates a secondary attachment. This approach interferes less with the function of the muscles but prevents most of the muscle's pull from reaching the epicondyle. The main problem with the old 2-inch band is that it was difficult to bring the band up close to the epicondyle without it digging into the crease of the elbow. The new, patent-pending band is narrower everywhere but at the pocket that holds the Gel Arc. Another patent-pending design is the unique way to shorten the band that is built into every Serola Gel Arc Elbow Brace, allowing it to fit everyone from little girls to lumber jacks.

Conforming Bandage

DeRoyal has released Apex, a conforming gauze bandage similar to the old Sof-Kling product from Johnson & Johnson. DeRoyal listened to customers expressing their need for an absorbent dressing that clings to itself yet conforms to the body without sagging. Apex is a one-ply polyester and rayon blend that conforms easily to body contours, stretches and clings to itself, is highly absorbent, maintains its conformability when wet, and remains in place even when saturated with drainage. Because it is soft, low-linting, and does not ravel, it works well as a primary dressing that is gentle and noncontaminating to fragile skin. With its lack of excess bulk, Apex is easy to apply, can be cut, and provides the proper amount of stretch that requires minimal securement. When used as a secondary dressing, it reduces primary dressing displacement when the patient moves or is moved by clinicians.

Ankle Brace

Cascade Dafo Inc, Ferndale, Wash, has announced the DAFO FlexiSport, which is designed for active ambulators and features the company's Softy Foam Liner, offering excellent foot control and comfort for patients using the brace. The brace was designed for active patients who need comfortable control of foot position, combined with firm but flexible ankle control. The FlexiSport design consists of a wraparound soft foam liner for comfortable control of a bony or fixed-foot anatomy, combined with a strong, but flexible, outer shell. Flexible ankle control is achieved via a pair of cutouts in the posterior upright of the outer shell. These cutouts allow the shell to flex with a spring-like resistance without breaking. The FlexiSport is designed for larger, more mature patients who may otherwise overpower the flexibility of the DAFO 3.5, and is less limiting than the stronger control provided by the DAFO Turbo design.
