Five-Point Safety Harness for Wheelchairs

Research published by the University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) found that a wheelchair-anchored five-point restraint harness will offer improved restraint and safety to small children compared to a three-point lap and shoulder belt. The research resulted in a proposed change to the ANSI-RESNA WC/19 standard requiring wheelchairs for users weighing less than 50 pounds to be tested with the five-point harness.
