Balance-Training Tool

The new FitBALL Peanut is a balance and core-training tool for beginners who may be anxious about training or rehabilitating on a standard FitBALL exercise ball. With an elongated peanut shape, the FitBALL Peanut rolls in only one direction at a time and is more easily controlled by the user than a standard FitBALL, which rolls in multiple directions. In addition, the peanut’s longer shape allows two people, such as a therapist and patient, to sit on the ball at once. The Peanut can also be used for children’s therapy because its top is closer to the ground than a standard exercise ball. The burst-resistant material is designed to slowly deflate if the ball should become punctured. The Peanut is part of the newly expanded line of FitBALL brand professional-quality fitness and therapeutic products.

Portable Knee-Extension Device

The elite seat® is a portable knee-extension device designed for nonoperative treatments of degenerative knee conditions. By evenly distributing force across the leg, the elite seat is an effective device for achieving full-knee hyperextension and reducing pain in bent knees caused by acute ACL injury, inadequate postoperative rehabilitation after ACL reconstruction, or total knee arthroplasty. With proper use, the elite seat helps patients significantly increase knee extension equal to the opposite knee, decrease pain level, and improve the overall function of the affected knee. The lightweight design allows a patient to recline, eliminating difficulties with hamstring tightness or spasms; in some cases, it can even prevent patients from having to undergo further surgery.

Information-Management Software

SourceMedical has released TherapySource v3.50, a clinical and administrative information-management system designed for the specialized needs of rehabilitation clinics. The new release includes numerous new features that provide rehab clinics the ability to further improve clinical and administrative processes. The most significant enhancement is a new feature that enables users to monitor the certification status of a patient’s plan of care in real time, from creation, to physician approval, to clinician verification. This feature allows both clinicians and administrative users to track a patient’s status and view clinical activity throughout the treatment cycle. The system’s enhanced reports and system alerts allow administrators to proactively monitor patients being treated without a certified plan of care and identify future visits that will require a certification.

Kinesio Taping (KT) is an absolute must-have skill for the committed musculoskeletal practitioner. It is easy to learn, requires minimal initial investment, and is reimbursable with many payors. The elastic, latex-free tape takes very little time to apply; is long-lasting, staying on for 3 to 5 days; and easy to remove. It is suitable for patients of every age or condition. KT is extremely versatile in its ability to re-educate the neuromuscular system, promote lymphatic flow, reduce pain, enhance performance, prevent injury, and promote injury resolution. Complementing the Kinesio family of products and accessories are the two newest manuals: Kinesio Taping for Lymphoedema and Chronic Swelling and Kinesio Taping in Pediatrics: Fundamentals and Whole Body Taping.

Home Therapy Treatment

The Econo 90 is 90/90 traction designed as safe, effective, and inexpensive home treatment for lower back pain. The device uses the top of a closed door and a keeper bar to securely anchor the positioning strap. The patient’s feet rest on the door to form 90° angles at the hips and knees, and a single-pull pelvic belt and rope pulley system with a locking mechanism are used to apply the lift. As the patient pulls down on the rope handle, his or her hips are cradled and rotated to flex the lumbar curve. This in turn increases the posterior separation between the vertebrae and reduces pressure on nerves and disks. The rope locks in place, and the patient relaxes in traction as prescribed by the physical therapist. A thigh strap provides comfort and prevents external rotation of the hips. A head and shoulder wedge can be added to increase flexion and stabilize the cervical and thoracic spine.
