High school students in Maryland’s Frederick County will have the chance to experience what it is like to be a professional physical or occupational therapist, via the Academy of Health Professions Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Program, offered by Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS).
The program, available for students entering grades 10-12 next school year, culminates in an Allied Health internship. It also will expose students to varied careers related to the physical and occupational therapy field, as it integrates concepts of kinesiology and athletic training.
Students will learn about musculoskeletal, neuromuscular, cardiopulmonary and integumentary-related injuries, diseases and disorders. They will also focus on preventive activities, therapeutic practices, and rehabilitation, explains a media release from FCPS.
This Maryland State Department of Education-approved program is part of the Academy of Health Professions and includes courses designed to expose students to the world of physical therapy such as Foundations of Medicine and Health Science, Structure and Functions of the Human Body, and Physical Rehabilitation.
FCPS will offer the program at the Career and Technology Center (CTC), adjacent to Frederick Community College, the release continues.
