In Human Kinetics’ newly released Functional Training, author Juan Carlos “JC” Santana, MEd, CSCS, explains what he considers are the benefits of functional training.

This type of training differs from sport-specific training in that it focuses on the application of functional strength to a sport skill, not necessarily the sport skill itself, according to a media release from Human Kinetics.

Santana, founder and director of the Institute of Human Performance, notes in the book that the benefits of functional training include the use of only basic equipment, the effective use of time, the ability to enable athletes to gain strength without size, and the ability to focus on and improve any sport skill, per the release.

The book features a three-tier approach to integrating functional movements into an existing strength program. It also uses a range of modalities among its 28 programs and 135 exercises, including body weight, bands and pulleys, dumbbells and kettlebells, medicine balls, and stability balls, the release continues.
