A 1-day, Cross Country Education course aims to offer participants an improved understanding of the intricate anatomy of the hand and how to accurately evaluate and treat hand pathologies. During the “Advance in Hand Therapy: From Evaluation to Treatment,” the Cross Country Education website notes that attendees will discuss commonly mistreated injuries and pinpoint treatment recommendations to address these cases in their practice.

The site notes that the course will also offer tips and concepts behind different types of splints commonly used for treatment of common hand pathologies. Attendees will also have the opportunity to practice evaluation tests during a lab session.

Course objectives include examining the intricate anatomy of the hand and determine how this impacts function, describing how to effectively evaluate common hand pathologies, and participate in a hands-on lab to increase your confidence with commonly used evaluation tests. Additionally, objectives include discovering treatment techniques for hand pathologies, including De Quervain’s, carpal tunnel syndrome, and wrist fractures, and discussing principles for splinting and identify commonly used splints.

The site notes that Josh Gerrity, OTR/L, CHT, is course speaker. Gerrity earned his bachelor’s degree in occupational therapy from the University of Mary in Bismarck, ND, and received his hand certification in 2009. Gerrity is currently employed with the Bone and Joint Center, also in Bismarck, where he works with a group of orthopedic surgeons including two board-certified hand specialists. He is an annual guest lecturer for the University of Mary physical therapy department and also participates in a biannual Orthopedic Update Seminar held in Bismarck for therapists, physicians, and nurses in the North Dakota, South Dakota, and Montana region. The site states that Gerrity is also registered with the National Board of Certification for Occupational Therapists and is a member of the American Society of Hand Therapists.

In addition to being available as a webcast, the course is available as a live seminar, audio, and video formats.
