An online continuing education course from MedBridge aims to provide a functional approach to treating movement dysfunction. The course, titled “Movement Dysfunction: An Evidence-Based Overview,” is designed to help clinicians understand the contributing factors to suboptimal outcomes as well as identify the necessary variables for properly identifying individuals at risk for future injury. An online course description notes that the importance of creating a Standardized Operating Procedure for identifying future injury risk is also outlined.

The Selective Functional Movement Assessment (SFMA) is presented, including the basic classifications of movement patterns, the Top Tier Tests, and scoring criteria for each test. According to MedBridge, clinicians will also be able to define and apply the concepts of differential diagnosis as used in the SFMA, as well as the Stop Light System of score the SFMA Breakouts and the “4 Rules of the SFMA” Treatment hierarchy.

There are four course chapters that comprise “Movement Dysfunction: An Evidence-Based Overview.” The first course chapter, “Why a Functional Approach,” identifies the main predictor of future musculoskeletal injury and discusses the contributing factors to suboptimal outcomes for return to sport after injury and rehabilitation. The second chapter, “Pain Changes Movement,” describes how pain alters motor control and how altered muscle activation influences mechanical behavior.

“Clinical Movement Assessment” defines and ascribes the basic classifications of movement patterns in the SFMA, and the final chapter defines and applies the concepts of differential diagnosis as used in the SFMA: Mobility & Stability, Unilateral & Bilateral, Loaded & Unloaded, Active & Passive, Consistent & Inconsistent, as indicated in the online course description.

Kyle Kiesel, PT, PhD, ATC, will be the presenter for this online education course. For more information, visit www.medbridgeeducation.com.
