Daniel Herman, MD, PhD, is the recipient of the 2014 American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) Foundation-American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM) Foundation Clinical Research Grant for his neuromuscular performance study. According to AMSSM news release, Herman’s study, titled “Assessment of Neuromuscular Performance Deficits and Recovery after Concussion: Implications for Anterior Cruciate Ligament Injury Risk,” will study how the magnitude and duration affect musculoskeletal injury risk in athletes after return to play.

The overall objective of the clinical study is enhancing injury prevention and rehabilitation, as indicated on the AMSSM news release.

In the grant program’s second year, the joint committee selected Herman’s proposal to receive a $20,000 award. The AMSSM news release notes that the primary purpose of the program is to foster original scientific investigations as well as advance the development of the principal investigator’s research education by requiring that a portion of the funds be applied to meet this goal.

Suzanne Hecht, MD, chair of the review committee, states, “The AMSSMF-ACSMF Clinical Research Grant Review Committee was pleased to fund a research study that will investigate a possible increased risk of musculoskeletal injury following a sports concussion.” Hecht adds, “This could have important implications for the management of sports concussions in the future.”
