NY SportsMed (NYSM) recently announced the launch of NY SportsMed RUN, a running program led by physical therapists tailored to the New York running community. According to the new release, the initiative is the first city-wide, standardized PT program specifically for runners. NY SportsMed RUN aims to combine cutting edge science with the latest in biomechanical methodology for a comprehensive approach.
The approach of the program consists of in-depth video analysis, a continuing education program, community outreach, and a running group headed by members of the NYSM staff. The video analysis portion of the program parallels physical therapy care and is frequently included in the treatment plan.
The weekly running group is free and open to anyone in the community. The group is intended to help provide further motivation to those who want to step up their “running game”. With a medical professional available to interact with, runners can try to better assess the areas that may need correction.
Wendy Rhodes, PT, Program Director of NY Sports Med Run, states the goal of the program is to be an outpatient physical therapy resource for runners of all levels. She explains that by using the latest in research and technology, the team is able to “assess a runner’s form and identify current biomechanical errors and potential injuries down the line,” adding that the needs of a runner can be met once their unique needs are understood.
The news release indicates that NY SportsMed has long been active in the New York running community. The practice sponsors New York races, actively participates with running organizations, such as Back on My Feet, and has their own NY Road Runners team.
