The American Physical Therapy Association (APTA), Alexandria, Va, recently credentialed Loyola University Medical Center, Maywood, Ill, as a post-professional residency program for physical therapists in orthopedics. Loyola is reportedly one of two centers in Illinois, and 52 centers across the country, to receive this accreditation.
After a PT obtains a license to practice, he or she can undergo a clinical residency, which is designed to help advance the therapist’s preparation as a provider of patient care services in a defined area of clinical practice. The residency reportedly combines opportunities for clinical supervision and mentoring with a theoretical basis for advanced practice and scientific inquiry. Through this program, the resident can acquire advanced expertise in examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis, intervention, and management of patients in a defined specialty.
